Milwaukee-Waukesha Beekeepers Association<\/a>. Monthly meetings are at 6:30 p.m. in the Brookfield Public Library Community Room.<\/p>\nNovember 3, 2014, Sue Dompke, owner of Sweet Mountain Farm addressed about 40 members of the Milwaukee-Waukesha Beekeepers Association giving an educational presentation about her research and experience raising Russian honey bees and the necessity of breeding tougher bees that will fend off parasites and viruses.<\/p>\n
A history of the Russian honey bee included examining the Russian bee\u2019s origins and its characteristics to know the genetic differences from other honey bee species and to understand why those differences are significant. A discussion followed about why beekeepers choose to raise Russian bees getting an in-depth look into the genetic and behavioral differences. Last, the group explored the question: Are Russian bees a good honey bee for me to raise? Understanding how Russian bees require a different management style and what is required to successfully manage a Russian bee colony.<\/p>\n
A varied audience of young and old, new beekeepers, inquiring minds, and well-seasoned professionals had questions that indicated a high level of interest and understanding. It would be a pleasure to host this talented and diverse group for a hands-on demonstration working in Sweet Mountain Farms Russian bee yard.
