UMD Researchers Seek to Understand Bee Deaths By Building Sentinel Hives
Don’t miss this audio bite from WAMU Radio 88.5 about the University of Maryland’s new pilot program for backyard beekeepers. The research will track hive weight, pollen count and mite loads from several test sentinel hives in Maryland. Contributions have poured in with great enthusiasm and the department of entomology has exceeded its $8,000 goal by 276%. The new research pilot program will give backyard beekeepers an early warning signal for stressed or diseased hives. If the pilot is successful it is expected that bee clubs across the nation will begin to use this early warning system.
